Top TipsLeigionnaires' Disease
The Health Protection Agency has found an association between not using screen wash in wiper fluid and the risk of contracting Legionnaires Disease.
Legionnaires Disease is commonly linked to water systems such as air conditioning units, showers etc where water is given off in a fine spray.
The bacteria that causes this disease can be found in stagnent water and those cars, tested in the HPAs control study, without screenwash were found to have a higher proportion of the bacterium and put drivers and passengers at a higher risk.
A simple recommendation to use screenwash may mitigate transmission of Legionella bacteria to drivers and passengers.
Further studies are required to further explore this finding, and to determine whether the use of screen wash in wiper fluid could play a role in preventing this disease.
